Unit 1 Glossary
Brownfield
A site that has been reclaimed from its previous industrial or commercial use. In contrast to a greenfield site, where the land is taken out of agricultural use and allocated another use.

Business in the Community
An organisation dedicated to enabling businesses to play an active part in the life of the wider community.


Competition analysis
Analysis of competitors and their products to find out how well the products and activities of competitors meet customer needs.


Direct and indirect competitors
Direct competitors are organisations producing similar products that appeal to the same group of consumers. Indirect competition comes from products that meet the same consumer need in a slightly different way.


Environmentally responsible
Actions relating to the impact of business and consumer activity on the environment.


Legislation
Acts of Parliament that create laws

Mission
The overall purpose of an organisation, often set out in a mission statement.

Objectives
The ends which an organisation works towards achieving.


Pressure groups
An organisation formed by people with a common interest who get together to further that interest. For example, Greenpeace who are concerned with environmental issues.


Regulator
The person whose job it is to determine what a particular industry can/cannot or must/must not do.


Self-regulatory
An organisation that is responsible for regulating its members through the adoption and enforcement of rules and regulations governing the business conduct of its members.


Service ethic
A code or way of behaviour centred on serving customers.


Social responsibility
Recognising duties and obligations towards other members and sectors of society.

Socially responsible
Actions that show care and concern for society as a whole.


Stakeholders
Individuals or groups with a direct interest in an organisation’s performance, shareholders and employees, suppliers etc.


Strategy
The means to achieving the end purpose (vision) of an organisation. The long term plans for the whole organisation.
